My First Crochet Anything.

Bitten by the crochet bug I have already shared my love for all things crochet kitschy, including the elusive Poodle Bottle Cover. Thank you Kit Harris.

In training for the ultimate crochet project I started with a very cold winter night by the fire and umpteen balls of red and one ball of purple wool. It’s a basic treble group stitch that I was practicing. I started and I could not stop. In fact I still have not stopped, it is just an interim break until I get-me-some-more red wool.

My red wool stash comprised of a variety of ply so I kept increasing my trebles to compensate. Now I would be fascinated to hear if that is an offical crochet term. So I find myself with a very frilly edge, that keeps getting frillier the further I crochet.

But it’s not enough more - more frills. I plan to crochet it to a size of about two metres square, so yes most of the rug will be frills. A desperate friend who clings to your legs and makes it tricky to part from oneself.

While waiting for more red I embarked on my first ever scarf. I had a weird speckledy ball of wool, very bright, so easy for me to see in order to try a new stitch- The Grill. It was a tricky project to begin. The problem with the grill stitch is its way too simple. I am not being sarcastic.

I was reading the instructions in the very special crochet lingo only other crochet enthusiasts come close to understanding. I was reading it so closely that I was sure I was missing something, or incorrectly interpretting things, which of course then I did. So after a frustrating evening I gave up. The next day I kept eyeing my abandoned project. I unravelled it all and took the instructions in slowly and logically and Voila!

It happened so quickly. Before I knew it I was back in black, creating the grill stitch (well a variant really) in a chenille wool that looked like little eyelashes.

I had lots of this wool so the scarf grew at a rapid rate. I used a chunky size 6 hook and really it was such a fluffy wool it was crocheted more by rythm than sight.

It was soon receiving admiring comments from Mr S and it was his Birthday last week, so it made a timely present. It’s also winter here so it was twice timely. It also has special magical powers.

It looked so cool I had to have one too. So I made another one for me. It’s magic too. It tripped the dog when we were out walking today.

I could easily devote the rest of my life to making scarves. They are one of my favourite things. Warm, snuggly and practical they also make the perfect embellishment that can be worn in endless ways. They are easy to make. Too easy. Note to self, in order to develop one’s crochet skills one must move on from a scarf. Definitely a hat next.
